The Economic Benefits of Healthy Buildings

An IWBI Research Study

The International WELL Building Institute (IWBI) has recently released a report titled “Investing in Health Pays Back,” which highlights how implementing healthy building solutions can lead to enhanced performance and higher economic returns.

The research demonstrates that strategies promoting healthier buildings can increase employee productivity, reduce absenteeism, and lower healthcare costs. One of the standout findings reveals that improvements in air quality, thermal comfort, and lighting produced a health-related Net Present Value (NPV) of $2 million in one building over a decade—45 times higher than the $44,000 energy-related NPV for the same measures.

In terms of real estate, the benefits of investing in healthy building solutions are notable. The research shows that certifications for healthy buildings can significantly boost property values and rents, with increases ranging from 4.4% to 7.7%.
