Cascade Impactors

TSI’s cascade impactors effectively collect particles with aerodynamic diameters ranging from 10 nm to 10 µm, in 3 to 13 size fractions, and at flow rates of 2, 10, 30, or 100 L/min. The number of stages influences the size resolution and detail of the quantitative analysis. The MOUDI II impactors feature rotating stages, which ensure a more uniform particle deposition across the impaction surface. This design increases particle mass collection, minimizes bounce and re-entrainment, and enhances the accuracy of quantitative analysis. The high-flow impactors (HFI) are designed for efficient sampling of particles in pristine environments with low concentrations.

Cascade impactors remain a gold standard for aerodynamic particle size measurement. By separating particles into discrete size fractions based on inertia, impactors enable researchers to quantify mass and composition by size, assess deposition mechanisms, and evaluate exposure risks in real-world and controlled environments.

Applications:

  • Aerodynamic size distribution measurement in ambient and source testing
  • Filtration efficiency and loading behavior by size fraction
  • Inhalation and respiratory deposition studies
  • Material and emission characterization for industrial processes
  • Method validation and cross-technique comparisons with mobility sizing

Technical Benefits:

  • Defined Stage Cut-Points: Characterize particle size with confidence, stage by stage.
  • Analytical Flexibility: Perform gravimetric weighing, microscopy, or chemical assays on collected substrates.
  • Robust Operation: Supports field and lab use with durable construction and reliable flows.
  • System Integration: Pair with generators, denuders, dryers, and analyzers for complete studies.

Best Practices:

  • Select substrates and coatings that help reduce particle bounce and wall losses.
  • Verify flows and pressure drops routinely to maintain stage cut-points.
  • Condition samples to stable temperature and humidity before weighing.
  • Combine impactor data with CPC/OPC measurements for comprehensive characterization.

Selection Considerations:

  • Number of stages and target cut-points
  • Flow rate, sampler interface, and pump capacity
  • Substrate type and analysis methods
  • Portability and field-readiness needs

Outcome:
Cascade impactors provide actionable insights into particle behavior, supporting regulatory research, product development, and exposure assessment. TSI can help you select an impactor configuration that aligns with your flow rates, analytical methods, and deployment environment.
