This webinar discusses the challenges associated with sizing dust particles with imaging. In addition, an example research study is presented where TSI's Size Shape Analysis (SSA) imaging module is used. Presented by Dr. Sheng-Chieh Chen, Particle Laboratory, University of Minnesota, and Dr. Wing Lai of TSI Incorporated. Dust (Arizona Road Dust) dynamics are used for calibrating particle instruments, correlating health effects in exposure studies, as well as challenging different types of filters. During this webinar, we explore the non-intrusive shadowgraph imaging technique for measuring dust dynamics. It is an excellent approach in determining dust dynamics, providing the simultaneous result of sizing velocity, as well as concentration of the dust particles in a plane. Since the system is based on the measurement of the “shadow” of the dust particles—with laser illumination in the forward scatter direction—the size of the shadow is measured directly without any assumed pre-conceived shape of the dust particles. The concentration is estimated based on the inspection area size and the number of dust particles detected. The system allows measurements over a period of time, giving the result of particle concentration and flux information.
The flat-flame burner is a helpful device for calibrating a laser induced fluorescence (LIF) system with a known concentration of species. This webinar will provide an introduction to the standard flame created by a specialized burner system (known as the "Flat Flame Burner") and its use in helping make optical diagnostic methods quantitative. The use of a standard burner to generate a laminar flame provides a reference flame that is highly repeatable in operation. As a result, data sets generated by other researchers using the same standard burner can be used to check measurements obtained by another user or method. Further, extensive detailed chemistry calculations can also be used in conjunction with measurements as another check of measurements. As a result of these characteristics, it is possible to use this burner to produce flames that can be used to calibrate diagnostics for measurement of various scalars, such as temperature or species concentration, including OH. For best results, it is critical to carefully control operating conditions and flows. As a result, the overall burner support system (flow meters, safety measures, etc.) is equally as important as the burner itself.

In this overview, a number of optical methods (e.g., Rayleigh, Raman, CARS) are introduced as established methods for determining temperature and/or other scalar quantities within reacting flows. As a means to help verify measurements using these techniques, the flat flame burner is also introduced and its application for calibration is discussed.
