Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) is an optical technique in which a high speed camera is used to image the motion of tracer particles within a flow of interest. A light source, usually in the form of a laser with short-duration pulses, is used to illuminate a plane within the flow. The images are segmented into smaller regions of pixels and the motion of the tracer particles are evaluated. Advanced processing techniques extract quantitative velocity information from the qualitative images. The technique can be expanded to volumetric domains through the use of additional cameras and by illuminating a volume.

This webinar will discuss the techniques used as well as important considerations such as camera noise and measurement uncertainty. Several applications will be discussed.
