Particles emitted during vehicle braking are estimated to contribute up to 20% of traffic-related emissions, and are relevant to public health. While tailpipe emissions are known for toxicity, brake wear has recently been shown to trigger inflammation in lung cells to the same degree as do diesel emissions. Quantifying this public health hazard requires measuring brake emissions using an established method.
This 45-minutes webinar will review the brake emissions measurement method established by the Particle Measurement Program (PMP), and will introduce the particle sizing, counting and sampling instruments from TSI that can be used in accordance with that method. Published data collected during brake wear studies will also be presented.
Dr. Andrea J. Tiwari is an aerosol engineer with over 10 years of experience. She earned her Ph.D. at Virginia Tech, where she studied with Dr. Linsey Marr, who is a leading researcher on both the effects of engineered nanoparticles on the environment, and the study of airborne viruses. Dr. Tiwari’s dissertation research focused on the generation and chemical reactions of aerosolized carbon-based nanoparticles. She has published her scientific research in several journals. As an Applications Engineer at TSI Incorporated, she regularly works with customers in universities, government, and industries from around the globe to help them solve their aerosol-related challenges.
Dr. Carsten Kykal studied atmospheric physics and received his PhD at TU Munich combining particle instruments and homemade fluid mechanics solutions to characterize aerosols of same size on their optical properties. In 2008, he joined TSI as an application engineer and moved into a sales role a few years later still supporting aerosol and fluid mechanics researchers in EMEA.
Dr. Stéphane Furusho-Percot has more than 13 years of experience in particle measurements and holds a PhD in this domain from Ecole Centrale de Nantes (France). He has been with TSI for 6 years as Research and Analytic Sales Specialist and has been involved as a member of the European Particle Measurement Program (PMP) informal working group / brake emissions task force 2 with the goal to provide minimum specifications for measuring and characterizing brake emissions.
