Filters come in all sizes, shapes and quality levels. Depending on the application, the standards prescribe testing with different aerosols and different particle size ranges. For example, HVAC (Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) filters that are used in room or building ventilation to provide acceptable indoor air quality typically have a large surface area and low pressure drop. Filters for pressurized air and tested to VDI 3926-2 have very different characteristics.
Standards are updated and new standards are created for filter testing, such as ISO 16890. This standard aims to harmonize the testing of HVAC filters, previously done to EN 779 and ASHRAE 52.2.
