Aerosol Neutralizers

Aerosol neutralizers are used in aerosol research, as particles from nebulization, combustion, or powder dispersion often carry electrostatic charges. Excessive charge can lead to increased particle loss in transport and sampling systems, negatively impacting filter efficiency measurements. To ensure accurate functioning of instruments based on electrical mobility, an aerosol neutralizer is needed to provide a predictable charge distribution to the aerosol particles.

Neutralizers fall into two categories: radioactive neutralizers (models 348002, 3077A, 3077, 3054A, 3054, 3012A, 3012), which use emissions from decaying radioactive elements to charge particles, and non-radioactive neutralizers (models 3088, 1090), which utilize electricity to generate x-rays or high voltages for direct particle charging.

Accurate aerosol measurements start with well-conditioned particles. Neutralizers help shift particle charge distributions toward a near-Boltzmann equilibrium, which supports mobility classification and improves comparability across instruments and labs. TSI neutralizers integrate seamlessly with classification and counting systems for a dependable measurement chain.

Applications:

  • SMPS and DMA-based sizing workflows
  • Optical particle counter correlation and response studies
  • Filtration efficiency testing with better charge control
  • Calibration and verification campaigns across multiple sites
  • Environmental chamber work and source characterization

Technical Benefits:

  • Equilibrium-Like Charge States: Supports assumptions used by mobility sizing and many data reduction methods.
  • Broad Compatibility: Connects easily with aerosol generators, DMAs, CPCs, OPCs, and impactors.
  • Technology Choices: Soft X-ray and other methods allow alignment with facility policies.
  • Stable, Reproducible Conditioning: Helps reduce variability in downstream measurements.

Best Practices:

  • Place the neutralizer between the generator and classifier for maximal impact on sizing accuracy.
  • Verify charge conditioning by comparing mobility-based data sets across runs.
  • Maintain flow and residence time within recommended ranges for consistency.
  • Document neutralizer type and settings in reports to support peer review.

Selection Considerations:

  • Technology preference and regulatory context
  • Flow rate and concentration range
  • Integration with existing SMPS/OPC/CPC systems
  • Maintenance schedule and consumables

Outcome:
Aerosol neutralizers support data quality, enabling more reliable sizing, better cross-instrument alignment, and clearer research conclusions. TSI can help you choose the right neutralizer for your flow rates, measurement methods, and lab policies.
