TSI has developed a unique system specifically engineered for measuring flows in MEMS devices, microchannels, vessels, and other small-scale flow devices.

Product Details

TSI’s MicroPIV System makes use of the same core principles and components of a traditional PIV system (laser illumination source, camera, synchronizer, and Insight4G data acquisition and processing software), but with specific modifications ideal for high-magnification applications. A typical MicroPIV system makes use of an inverted microscope (an upright arrangement is also possible), fluorescent seed particles, a pulsed laser source for seed particle excitation, and a epifluorescent filter cube to isolate the emission wavelength for imaging. Due to the reflected light arrangement, a MicroPIV System typically relies on narrow depth-of-field imaging typical of microscope optics to obtain results on the plane of interest.

Image processing for MicroPIV is carried out using TSI's INSIGHT 4G™ software’s 2D-PIV module, which has multiple features ideal for MicroPIV including advanced image pre-processing capability, ensemble PIV, and image (and velocity field) masking, among others.

MicroPIV systems are highly customizable. A variety of options and accessories exist for the microscope, objective lenses, light source, seed particles, filter cubes, cameras, and more. TSI has provided MicroPIV systems utilizing unique wavelengths, multi-deck microscopes, confocal imaging, image splitting, and more.

In developing this system, TSI has collaborated closely with pioneers in microflow measurements, optical system development, epifluorescence illumination, processing-algorithm development and analysis techniques. TSI has licensed this technology and implemented the patented concepts into the design of its MicroPIV System, making it an advanced and accurate tool for microflow measurements.

MicroPIV systems can be used for flows with characteristic dimensions ranging from tens to hundreds of microns. In some cases, a more traditional PIV system, using long-distance telescope optics adapted for camera lenses may be more suitable.
