The Oil Aerosol Generator Model 8233 has been designed specifically for use with TSI® CertiTest® Models 8130A and 8150 Filter Testers. This oil generator meets the requirements for oil aerosol specified in the NIOSH respirator standard, 42 CFR part 84, using DOP or Emery 3004 (PAO) oils.

How the Model 8233 Operates

The size of particles used for filter testing is critical when determining a filter’s penetration. To generate the appropriate particle size distribution for testing, the Aerosol Generator first produces an oil mist in the generator reservoir using one atomizer jet for Emery oil or two jets for DOP.

This aerosol is pushed by compressed air out of the reservoir and into the screen block, which is the first of the three blocks at the top of the generator. From there it passes at a constant velocity through a fine mesh screen that shapes the aerosol size distribution to be suitable for filter testing. This velocity is determined by the generator’s screen flow setting, which is adjustable by the user. By controlling the residence time of the aerosol in the screen block, the screen flow setting acts as a fine adjustment to the aerosol size distribution. The conditioned aerosol then exists the generator. A drain bottle collects any waste (excess) oil that drains out of the generator.

Important Note: When the Model 8233 Oil Aerosol Generator is used, filter penetrations are different than those obtained testing with the 1081414R-EN Paraffin oil generators which is used for the European EN-143 and EN 13274-7:2019 respirator standards. Those interested in conducting filter testing in accordance with EN-143 and EN 13274-7 should use Model 1081414R-EN Paraffin oil aerosol generator.
