Fit Assurance: A Complement to Quantitative Fit Testing
Respirator Fit Assurance refers to the practice of using particle counting instruments to evaluate how well a respirator maintains its seal during job-specific movements or simulated work conditions. Unlike quantitative fit testing, which follows standardized protocols and provides a pass/fail result, fit assurance is more exploratory in nature. It allows organizations to observe how respirator performance may be affected by posture, movement, or exertion, offering insights that can inform training, support product development, or guide respirator selection. These assessments are typically conducted in safe, controlled environments and are intended to complement, not replace, regulatory fit testing.
